April's Employment Situation Summary from the BLS showed the US economy gained only 160,000 jobs in the month while the unemployment rate held steady at 5 percent. There was a slight dip in the laborforce participation rate from 63 percent to 62.8%. Meanwhile, average weekly hours ticked up to 34.5 and average hourly earnings rose to $25.53 representing a 2.5% increase year-over-year. The increase in average hours and earnings are signs of a tighter labor market. This may also be visible in the slowdown in overall job creation.
